The shipbuilding industry includes ship repair, dismantling, nascent industries and the marine energy sector. The ensemble employs about 42 thousand people.
Shipbuilding is positioned on vessels with high added value, with a very high specificity: liners, gas carriers, high-speed vessels, submarines, stealth vessels, fishing vessels: from large ocean tuna to the smallest coastal ones, research vessels, easement, para-oil on the shelf.
As a result, the hired professionals have a virtually infinite range of skills, have a great ability to adapt to innovation, and have a wide variety of levels of responsibility. The most advanced technologies are constantly being introduced. These professionals are found both on site (assemblers) and among suppliers and subcontractors. They often account for more than half of the cost of a vessel. In 2007, shipbuilding grew by over 20%.
Naval architect The tasks of a naval architect are twofold: the actual drawing of the ship (hull, deck, sails, etc.) and all the related calculations. Therefore, this work assumes a good knowledge of mathematics, physics, strength of materials, industrial design, computer science. Sometimes a naval architect is self-employed. There is no standard for training naval architects, but it can be done as an option in engineering schools or architecture schools, egcs training.
As in general in mechanical engineering, the draftsman works closely with the project manager to develop detailed drawings of all parts and establish the nomenclature: this task is a prerequisite for the production of a product. The designer must ensure that his plans comply with the manufacturing rules of the classification societies.
He installs power generators, distribution boards and all electrical distribution cables and receiver connections.
He is responsible for the assembly and adjustment of electronic transmission equipment, the expansion of navigation aids, sound systems, etc.
He is responsible for refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
He is responsible for the circuits of many of the fluids used on board, together with the engine manufacturers.
This name does not correspond to the official title, but corresponds to the specialties chosen as an option by engineers who have graduated from various high schools. The roles assigned to these engineers are also very numerous and are focused on two main functions: on the one hand, the design of ships, considered as complete systems, as well as their various equipment (vehicles, navigation aids, etc., on the other hand, the implementation of plans, control production, responsibility for development, monitoring the correspondence between concepts.
